CLA Case Study – International Accounting Body

Leading International Accounting Body

Capability Framework

The Client

One of the world’s largest accounting bodies with a global membership of more than 160,000 members. The organisation exists to advance trusted and valued accounting and business professionals who enhance their communities. Core services to members include education, training, technical support and advocacy.

The Opportunity

We have been working with our client for the last 4 years in two capacities – we partner with them as experts in competency architecture (leadership and technical skills) to support their Corporate Learning Solutions channel to market. Numerous clients seek their expertise to build finance competency frameworks and they bring in CLA to support with these projects. We also partner directly to ensure their Accounting and Finance Capability Framework that underpins all learning products and solutions for members is regularly validated and up to date. This framework is the basis from which professionals and employers identify and acquire the knowledge areas and skills required for success in today’s business environment. It underpins their online assessment tool and is also used for assessing competencies of finance teams within other organisations

Methodology

In 2017, 2020 and again in 2022, CLA supported our client with the critical review, refresh and validation of the non-Technical and later Technical elements of the Accounting and Finance Capability Framework to ensure the descriptors were observable / measurable / objective and no duplication existed. This approach included:.

  • Review of existing assets and materials, review of industry standards, white papers and research regarding emerging competencies in the finance profession that are critical for the future world of work
  • Stakeholder consultation through interviews and focus groups (internal and external stakeholders to unpack user experience, structure and aesthetics of the framework, what is missing, assets that support the implementation of the framework (i.e., job families, career pathways, user guides, assessment options, implications for learning and development)
  • Stress testing and validation through gathering qualitative and quantitative feedback via interviews and surveys. Key areas explored through stress testing include validity and relevance of items and appropriateness of proposed structure of the framework
  • Preparation of final framework and supporting recommendations for usage across various stakeholder groups.

The Outcome

The revised frameworks that we have worked on represent significant steps forward for how the organisation defines capabilities for their membership base and corporate clients. CLA have been invited to ‘train the trainer’ and teach the internal consulting team how to execute reviews of capability frameworks for their clients.

“The CLA presentation was a high note to leave on. I love that you have been bold in your recommendations. It is just what was needed. Thank you!”
